If you know anything about Bennett’s Books you probably know that we are a community-focused bookstore - our mission is to make the world a better place. In 2017, with the rise and attempted normalization of blatant hatred, bigotry, and intentional ignorance, that mission has become more important than ever. Civil liberties are under constant attack; our environment is besieged by environmental terrorists; Nazis and white supremacists spread hate with impunity; lies (“alternative facts”) are being actively and proudly spread by the very highest reaches of the government - these are scary times.
There is hope though - every single day there are countless acts of resistance happening across the country. People are waking up in a way that I haven’t seen before. And, to the point, our bookstore is becoming a hub of progressive action in the fight for peace, equity, and justice. In addition to encouraging literacy and learning, we recently opened the Steve Milton Memorial Community Room and it is being used a center of resistance. We need your help though!
Bennett’s Books is not profit-driven so our continued existence is often a struggle. Since opening I have always worked at least two other jobs at a time to keep the store open - that’s okay; I’m more than willing to continue to do so, but in order for the bookstore to thrive and reach its full potential we need your help. Our goal is to raise $14,000 through our membership program which will guarantee our survival for at least another year. It will also allow us to continue to operate the community room and support progressive community action. And, if at any point during the year we reach $20,000, every dollar beyond that will go directly to efforts supporting peace, equity, and justice.
Our fundraising goal is modest but our potential to be be a catalyst for progressive change is enormous. If you ever said you would have enlisted in Dumbledore’s Army, joined the Rebellion against the Empire, followed the Mockingjay, or stepped up to be part of the Fellowship of the Ring - now is the time! Become a member of Bennett’s Books and join the fight for peace, equity, and justice.
